‘Synchronized Flushing’—Test of A Society’s Will to Cooperate

October 7, 2012

Toilets definitely come in handy during a round of golf. And the same applies to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, the country’s second-largest city. But Bulawayo has a problem.

Authorities recently appealed to Bulawayo homeowners to flush their toilets at a specified time as a way to unblock sewers after days of severe water rationing. States the L.A. Times (Sept. 23, 2012), “The city has asked its more than 1 million residents to flush their toilets simultaneously when water supplies are restored. City officials said ‘synchronized flushing’ was needed to clear waste that would have accumulated in sanitary facilities affected by days of water outages.”

Synchronized flushing will never become an Olympic event but when 1 million people flush their toilets simultaneously, it’s quite an honor celebrating the inventiveness of Thomas Crapper.
